Are you intrested in becoming a member?

You will need to Print an Application Package, and return it to the address provided below.  You also can E-Mail the completed application to newhavenfire.chief@cnymail.com  The application package includes:

§  Membership Application

§  Driver’s License Background (LENS Form)

§  Membership Interest Statement

After we receive your background investigation back, we will present your application to the executive committee for review.  At that time, we will also interview you.  This interview is more of an information exchange where we describe the steps in becoming a member and we give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.  To make this easier on you we have described this information here.

§  The New Haven Volunteer Fire Corporation is a Private not for profit membership corporation that contracts with the town of New Haven for Fire and Rescue Services.  We are regulated by the Bylaws of the Corporation.

§  Once the executive committee approves your application we will make a recommendation for probationary membership to the corporation, and they will vote on it.  This is done at a regular business meeting, which is held on the first Wednesday of each month.  Once the vote has been taken, you will be notified in writing of the results.

§  Once voted into Probationary Membership, you have six months to become a Regular Member.  The requirements for becoming active are to show an interest in the corporation, and become familiar with equipment and the operation of the corporation.  Voting for Regular membership is also at a regular business meeting.  While a probationary member the following restrictions apply:

§  You cannot vote

§  You will not be given the combination to the building

§  You cannot use a blue light

§  You will be issued a pager at some point during your probationary membership.  Typically in 3-4 months depending on availability.

§   Once you have been voted into Probationary Membership we will send you for a physical exam at our expense.  We will provide you the details on how to arrange for the physical at that time.  Once you have completed your physical exam, you will be issued turnout gear (Coat, Boots, Pants, Helmet etc.)  This equipment is kept at the station as everyone except the Chiefs are required to report to the station whenever there is an alarm.

§  Once you are a probationary member, you will be provided with a handbook that contains all of our Policies, Procedures and the Bylaws.  This is information you are expected to become familiar with as a probationary member.

§  The attendance requirements are, to at all times, have attended four (4) business meetings in the previous 6 months. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month.

§  You must attend at least 12 drills every 12 months.  The 12 drills must have been completed in 9 or more of the previous 12 months.  Drills are held on the second Wednesdays at 7PM, the fourth Wednesday at 7PM.  If there is a fifth Wednesday in the month there is a drill at 7PM also.  Make up drills can be arranged by contacting the Line Officer designated by the Chief. The intent is that you attend a minimum of one drill a month with some allowance for circumstance where you can make it to a drill in a given month.

§  Our Policies require completing the Basic Firefighter training course provided by the state within 18 months of becoming a regular member.  This area will require some coordination.  This training is a combination of classroom and outside based activities provided by State instructors.  Should you be applying for an EMS membership you will have 24 months after achieving regular member status to complete either a Certified First Responder (CFR) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class.

§  We also have fund raising and other activities.  There is no attendance requirement for these, but you are encouraged to support what you can.

As previously mentioned, the Corporation must vote on your application, and while we would expect it to be favorable, we cannot guarantee the outcome.  We can guarantee that you will be notified in writing of the outcome.  We hope you find this information helpful.

Once your background investigation is completed, we will be in touch with you to arrange for an interview.

Sincerely,

The Executive Committee
